Understanding It

About bladder & bowel health

Leaking when you laugh or exercise, sudden urges, or planning your day around bathroom access are common experiences — but they are not something you simply have to accept.

The pelvic floor muscles play an important role in bladder and bowel control. Physical therapy looks at how these muscles work alongside your breathing, posture, fluid and bathroom habits, and daily activities, and builds a plan around your specific concerns.

Common Concerns

Symptoms and concerns we often hear

Everyone's experience is different. These are common reasons women reach out — your evaluation focuses on what applies to you.

  • Leaking with coughing, sneezing, jumping, or lifting
  • Sudden, strong urges to urinate
  • Frequent daytime or nighttime bathroom trips
  • A feeling of incomplete emptying
  • Straining or difficulty with bowel movements
  • Avoiding exercise or social plans because of symptoms

How PT May Help

How physical therapy may help

  • Pelvic floor training

Exercises to improve strength, endurance, and timing of the muscles that support bladder and bowel control.

  • Urge strategies

Techniques that may help calm sudden urges and give you more time to reach the bathroom.

  • Habit review

Practical guidance on bathroom routines, positioning, and everyday habits that can influence symptoms.

  • Return to activity

Gradually building confidence with exercise, lifting, and activities you have been avoiding.

Zona's individualized evaluation

Your evaluation reviews your symptoms, daily habits, and how your pelvic floor, breathing, and core work together during the activities that matter to you.

As a physical therapist-owned practice, every visit is one-on-one for 45–60 minutes. There is no one-size-fits-all program — your plan is built around your history and goals, and adjusted as you progress. Results vary from person to person, and we will be honest with you about what to expect.

    Your individualized plan

You leave with a clear explanation of what we found, a plan of care, and a few strategies to start at home.

FAQs

Questions women often ask

Prefer to talk it through? Call 678-765-0909.

Is bladder leaking just a normal part of getting older?

Bladder leaking is common, especially after pregnancy and around menopause, but common does not mean you have to live with it. Many women find that pelvic floor-focused physical therapy helps them understand and manage their symptoms.

Are pelvic floor exercises the same as Kegels?

Kegels are one type of pelvic floor exercise, but they are not right for everyone. Some people need to work on relaxing and coordinating the pelvic floor rather than only strengthening it. Your evaluation helps determine what fits your needs.

Should I see my doctor first?

If you have new symptoms, blood in your urine or stool, pain with urination, fever, or a sudden change in bowel habits, please see your physician first. Physical therapy works alongside your medical care.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your symptoms, goals, and how you respond to care. Your physical therapist will discuss an expected plan after your evaluation and adjust it as you progress.
