Understanding It

About pelvic floor physical therapy

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the base of the pelvis that supports the bladder, bowel, and pelvic organs. These muscles also work with your deep core and breathing to help stabilize your spine and pelvis.

When the pelvic floor is weak, overly tense, or not coordinating well, it may show up as leaking, pressure, discomfort, or pain. Pelvic floor physical therapy looks at how these muscles function as part of your whole body and works to improve strength, flexibility, and control.

How PT May Help

How physical therapy may help

Learn to find, contract, and fully relax your pelvic floor — the foundation for every other step.

  • Strength & coordination

Progressive exercises that help the pelvic floor work in sync with your breath and deep core.

  • Posture & movement

Look at how lifting, sitting, and daily tasks load the pelvis, and practice strategies that ease the demand.

  • Home program

A short, realistic routine you can do between visits to keep building on each session.

Zona's individualized evaluation

Your evaluation looks at your history, symptoms, breathing, posture, hips, and core, and how they relate to pelvic floor function.

As a physical therapist-owned practice, every visit is one-on-one for 45–60 minutes. There is no one-size-fits-all program — your plan is built around your history and goals, and adjusted as you progress. Results vary from person to person, and we will be honest with you about what to expect.

Is pelvic floor therapy only for women who have had children?

No. Pelvic floor concerns affect women at many stages of life, including those who have never been pregnant. Changes can be related to activity, posture, surgery, hormonal shifts, or aging.

Will my first visit be private?

Yes. Visits take place one-on-one with your physical therapist in a private setting. You can share as much or as little as you are comfortable with, and any part of the exam is discussed with you first.
